Dr. Axel Nawrath

Dr. Axel Nawrath was born in Hannover in 1954. He studied law in Frankfurt am Main, gaining his Dr. jur. in 1981. After passing his second state professional examination in Frankfurt in 1982, he practiced law from 1982 to 1983.
From 1983 to 1998 Axel Nawrath served in several different departments of the Federal Finance Administration and the Federal Court of Auditors. From 1998 to 2003 he joined the staff of the Federal Ministry of Finance, latterly as head of the National and International Financial Market and Currency Policy Department. It was during his period of office that a single financial services regulator was set up with the establishment of BaFin Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht.
In 2003, Axel Nawrath was appointed Managing Director of Deutsche Börse AG Aktiengesellschaft and Executive Board Member of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
From 2006 to 2009, Axel Nawrath was State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Finance, responsible for tax policy. In this position he chaired, inter alia, the Steering Committee of the Financial Market Stabilization Fund ( SoFFin Sonderfonds Finanzmarktstabilisierung).
Axel Nawrath was a member of the Executive Board of the German Development Bank KfW Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau from April 2009 until March 2014.
The Council of Ministers of the State of Baden-Württemberg appointed Axel Nawrath Chief Executive Officer of the L-Bank with effect from 1 July 2014.
He is Member of the Advisory Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank's Regional Office in Baden-Württemberg and he is Member of the Administrative Board of HSBC Hongkong And Shanghai Banking Corporation Trinkaus & Burkhardt AG.
Axel Nawrath resigned his mandate as a Member of the Board of the Association of German Public Sector Banks ( VÖB Bundesverband Öffentlicher Banken Deutschlands) on 13 March 2019, to which he had belonged since November 2014.
